The Endangered Languages of New York
  + stars: | 2024-02-22 | by ( Alex Carp | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +19 min
Most people think of endangered languages as far-flung or exotic, the opposite of cosmopolitan. All told, there are more endangered languages in and around New York City than have ever existed anywhere else, says Perlin, who has spent 11 years trying to document them. She has published children’s books in Wakhi and other endangered languages of the Pamir mountains in Central Asia. By the start of the pandemic, the city had begun official outreach in nine Indigenous languages and recorded videos in several other endangered languages. We cross-referenced E.L.A.’s New York City language list with three independent databases that track the threat level of languages around the world: Ethnologue, which catalogs all known living languages in the world; UNESCO’s World Atlas of Languages, a survey of all the languages spoken in UNESCO member states; and the Endangered Languages Project, a site to which the public can contribute content, managed by the First Peoples’ Cultural Council and the Endangered Languages Catalogue (ELCat) project at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

What Dogs Can Teach Us About Love and Grief

Owning a dog can teach a person as much about herself as about her companion, The Wall Street Journal’s Katherine Bindley reflected in a recent essay. From the beginning, owning a dog requires both love and resolve. But the most enduring lesson a dog can teach might be its last, according to hundreds of Journal readers who read and commented on Bindley’s essay. The inevitable passing of a pet and the processing of the subsequent grief is a powerful lesson in resilience. Richard Nelson of Wascott, Wis., is all too familiar with the anguish that comes with losing a pet.

A satellite identifies tank tracks in the dirt, and a mall security camera catches the moment a bomb in Gaza detonates. While journalists' access to the war in Gaza is limited, a flood of video from all sorts of sources documents what is — and isn't — going on. That means combing through an endless supply of video posted on sources like X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Instagram, Telegram and Facebook. Sometimes images from video games are passed off as real, but experts can usually spot them. Satellite images, video and photos helped The Washington Post track where Israeli forces went during their initial incursion into Gaza.

A group among hundreds of supporters of gun control laws rally in front of the US Supreme Court as the justices hear the first major gun rights case since 2010, in Washington, U.S. December 2, 2019. The law at issue makes it a crime for a person under a domestic violence restraining order to have a gun. And in this case, many gun rights groups and conservative or libertarian legal scholars support Rahimi's challenge, while many liberal and gun safety organizations oppose it. The Supreme Court will hear an appeal by President Joe Biden's administration of a ruling by the 5th U.S. It also emphasized that a gun's presence gun substantially increases the chances that a domestic violence incident turn deadly.

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) — An inquiry that began Tuesday into New Zealand’s worst mass-shooting will examine — among other issues — the response times of police and medics and whether any of the 51 people who were killed could have been saved. The inquiry represents the first time authorities will outline the details of how they responded to the March 2019 shooting. One of the issues under examination is whether an emergency door in the Al Noor mosque was functioning at the time of the shooting — and if not, why not. Farrant gave evidence that the shooting began at 1:40 p.m. at the Al Noor mosque, where 44 people were killed, and the first emergency calls began about a minute later. Ambulance staff entered the Al Noor mosque at 2:15 p.m., Farrant said, and began removing victims eight minutes later.

UK housing market challenging but rate pause offers hope -RICS
  + stars: | 2023-10-11 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) house price balance, which measures the difference between the percentage of surveyors seeing rises and falls in house prices, edged down to -69 after August's sharp drop to -68. Echoing other gauges of British house prices, RICS' latest figure was the weakest since February 2009 and was below the median forecast of -63 in a Reuters poll of economists. Britain's housing market boomed during the coronavirus pandemic as demand for homes with more space surged, but it has been a victim of the BoE's run of 14 interest rate hikes, which began in December 2021. "Although the decision to pause monetary policy tightening a few weeks ago provided a glimmer of relief for the market, interest rates are likely now set to remain on hold for a prolonged period," Parsons said. The weak state of the housing market has hurt companies such as building materials supplier Travis Perkins (TPK.L), which on Wednesday downgraded its annual profit forecast by as much as 27%.

ATLANTA (AP) — Herschel Walker's wife is seeking to sell the Atlanta house that the football great listed as his residence when he ran for U.S. Senate last year as a Republican. Julie Blanchard, whom Walker married in 2021, has owned the house and 1.5 acre (0.61 hectare) lot for more than 20 years. Democrat Raphael Warnock beat Walker by about 3 percentage points in a December 2022 runoff, ensuring Democrats a majority in the Senate. Such an exemption lowers property taxes and is only supposed to be available if a person is using a house as a primary residence. A financial disclosure statement filed during the Senate race showed the Atlanta house was being used as a rental property as recently as 2021.

RICS' house price balance, which measures the difference between the percentage of surveyors seeing rises and falls in house prices, increased to -30 last month from -39 in April. However, analysts are forecasting another slowdown for the housing market with markets largely expecting the BoE's Bank Rate to peak at 5.5% later this year, up from 4.5% now. Britain's housing market staged a recovery earlier this year after former prime minister Liz Truss's "mini-budget" caused turmoil in financial markets in September and sent the cost of fixed mortgage rates sharply higher to above 6%. Britain's biggest mortgage lender, Halifax, on Wednesday said house prices dropped by 1.0% year-on-year in May, the first annual decline since 2012. Some mortgage lenders, including Halifax and Nationwide Building Society have ramped up their fixed mortgage rates in response to the rise in borrowing costs in financial markets.

Community college enrollment rose this spring for the first time in a decade. Another route becoming more prevalent among the cohort is opting for community college instead of four-year undergraduate degrees. But according to a report by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, community college enrollment rose 0.5% in spring 2023. The drastic difference in cost is pushing many toward the two-year community college degrees. PMG, a global advertising company, offers a partnership with the local community college, Tarrant County College.

As ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence programs infiltrate workplaces, white-collar jobs are transforming the fastest. That professional and office work is changing so fast is according to a panel of executives who addressed thousands of professionals and job seekers at Tuesday’s WSJ Jobs Summit. The biggest workplace challenge so far this year across industries is how to adapt to the rapidly evolving role of AI in office work, they say.
